Actions in Salah : The Significance
I came across this and thought id share it with you. I found it very interesting and was very touched by it. I will always now remember the points of these actions when performing them in my Salah. Sometimes, we all pray routinely without thinking of the actions we perform - this below will definitely get your mind thinking and perhaps add that little bit of reasoning and thinking when you perform these actions in Salah.
Adhan & Iqamah:
Through this action we inform our heart to prepare to meet Allah (SWT) as the heart yearns to converse with Allah (SWT) and is waiting eagerly.
It is like when we try to teach a child to say Allah (SWT), the child before saying the word will tame the heart before saying Allah (SWT). The same way our heart is the student of our tongue and hence we are telling the heart that we are standing in front of Allah (SWT) and try to wake up our consciousness through namaz.
When Adhan and Iqamah are being recited two rows of angels form lines behind us in order to pray with us. The lengths of these lines are the difference between East & West and the Heaven & Earth.
The 6th Imam says that reciting the namaz and Iqamah increases our concentration.
Takbiratul Ihram
This is when the doors of mercy open for us. The empty palm raised up facing the qibla represents the fact that we have emptied our heart in order to receive the mercy of Allah (SWT).
Qiyam
This represents our humbleness towards Allah (SWT). It is practise for the Day of Judgement as we will be standing in the qiyam position and the heart will tell the tongue to do the Dhikr of Allah (SWT). Hence namaz is our practise.
Ruku
This is where we have reached the animal kingdom, as animals praise Allah (SWT) whilst they are grazing. When we bow we should do so with humbleness. This action takes us away from the whisperings of Shaytan and removes pride and arrogance.
Sajda
This is the lowest form of humility and it removes arrogance. It is in sajda that we are closest to Allah (SWT). When we spiritually do sajda, Allah (SWT)says to us that you went so low for me, as a result I will raise your status and increase your knowledge and lower the status of shaytan.
Tashahud
This is taking an oath of allegiance to Allah (SWT). We say there is no god but Allah (SWT), the Prophet is his Abd and that we will follow him. This too is practise for the Day of Judgement, as we will use our oath then too. We end tashahud with a salawat and this is a spiritual union with the Ahlul Bayt who in turn will send those blessings back on the mumin of Allah (SWT).
Salam
In our day-to-day life we do Salam when we have returned i.e. form a journey. In the same way in namaz we return from a journey the one from darkness into light – The journey of Meraj
Jus think about the reasoning of all this, its is simply and truly amazing what Allah (SWT) has made Waajib on us to do and the reason behind it are truly divinely inspired!
Now, I hope to read this reasoning everyday so that I can remember it everytime I perform these actions. Infact I will probably print these out and eep with my prayer mat so that I can read this before my salah until it becomes second nature.
