Just wanted to share a link re: the benefits of reciting the Holy Qur'an: http://www.islamonline.com/cgi-bin/news_service/spot_full_story.asp?service_id=745

As for learning to recite fluently, nobody learned to recite fluently from day one, like everything it takes practice. And there is always room to improve on our fluency of the Holy Qur'an as it is the revelation of Allah (SWT) protected in time.

---
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that Prophet Mohammad (SAWW) said: “Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses (because he doesn't know how to read it but is trying to), then he will have TWICE that reward.”

I have to say this email hit home. I just returned from a haj trip. Everywhere I went, I heard people recite so beautifully. In Mina, the people in my group had a little Quran Khani thing - but like you, I felt too embaressed to join in b/c of my very poor recitation.
Anyway, another thing I reminded me of you was the part about the yaseen. When my dad passed away, I could not recite the yaseen well enough to ever recite the whole thing for him. I always stopped part way through. After that, I practised really hard and when I went to Mombasa after a few years, I felt so happy to give my dad the gift of Yaseen. However as a result of my lack of practise I find myself back to square one.
I pray Allah gives us both the strength to continue practising so that the words of the Quran rolls freely from our tongues - Ameen
